[opal_migration_leads] [EXTERNAL SENDER] new book shelf / display

As Laurence said, Hiram has a new book location code in Alma (that doesn’t exist in Sierra) and, as you’ve found, the typical process in Alma is to use the Change Item Information (Fulfillment > Scan in items > Change Item Information) and use the “Temporary” Change Type.
https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Knowledge_Articles/New_Books_-_suggested_workflow
If you specify a Due Back date, e.g., if you want things to stay on the new book shelf for 30 days, you can specify that. If you do, then a nightly job runs to create restore requests for things that are due to be removed and restored to their original location … and the items appear in the Pick From Shelf list.
The documentation cautions that if you specify a Due Back date, you may run into situations where an item is configured to automatically revert to its original location but, if it’s checked out at the time, it can generate a recall, which you likely don’t want. To avoid that, we’d need to disable recalls for the restore process, which we’ve done for Hiram.
Of course, you aren’t required to specify a Due Back date, which should avoid the potential for recalls. You’d just need to keep track manually of when items should come off the new book shelf.
I suppose you might also be able to just change the location permanently to the new book shelf and change it again permanently when you remove it, but I’m not 100% confident in all the implications of doing it that way. So much to learn ….
Matt

Hi Lauren,
My plan is like what your link does. We are going to have a New Book Shelf location code and then set it as a temporary location for our new books. I’ll probably have a few trusted students who I will have to change the new books to the temporary location after they are processed and ready to be put on the new book shelf. Honestly, I’m not sure if there is any other way to do this.

Hi all,
Has anyone investigated how they will process books for their "new books shelf" if you use that? It seems like we will need an Alma location for this. See some other library workflows:
https://sunybroome.libguides.com/c.php?g=927845&p=6700282
https://emory.screenstepslive.com/s/alma/m/stacks/l/522559-adding-and-removing-items-from-a-temporary-location
(These are essentially the same process - and would be similar for putting things on display which would also need a location -?)
My understanding from yesterday's meeting is that we can add locations in Alma at this time and they will be retained as part of our configuration at cutover. Since there's nothing in Sierra that will match, it will just be an empty location until we start entering new things in Alma.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks! Lauren
