Hi all -
There were some questions at the cataloging training that I said I would
pass along to OPAL, and here are the questions with Matt's responses
(below).
Cheers, Lauren
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- *Will OPAL be able to configure the job for publishing bib record
level holdings to OCLC to run on a scheduled basis for OPAL libraries that
want this?*
Long term, yes. However, publishing bib level holdings to OCLC requires
working with OCLC to establish a “data sync” process. However, before a
library does that, they should do an OCLC holdings cleanup process (one of
those “Streamlined Holdings Update” projects). Also, we are focusing on
getting Alma to work with existing workflows (to minimize near-term
changes), so we’d want to hold off on doing this until well after go-live.
- *Also, if people want LHR updated?*
Eventually, yes. However, like the bib level holdings, this too requires a
data sync process. I’ll also point out that some OPAL libraries *already *do
this. Over the coming months, we’ll need to work with OCLC to adjust their
processes to work with Alma and its output format (and to configure it on
the Alma side). We will be working on that over the summer. Once that’s
done, then we’ll apply what we’ve learned from the current libraries for
any new libraries.
- *If exporting a record from OCLC, can the integration profile be set
to publish holdings as well - or to set the management tags on the bib to
"publish" I guess?*
In theory, yes. But we’ll need to spend a little more time investigating
all the different options and identifying an appropriate workflow.
Obviously, these are complex processes that we’ll certainly be looking into
after go-live. For now, though, we’re focusing on getting the existing
workflows working. But it’s exciting to think about all the different
cataloging workflows Alma supports … and to have time to evaluate which
workflows make sense under all the different scenarios.
